Shortbread Contest

PictureFlavored Shortbread
RUTH SCHUDEL MEMORIAL SHORTBREAD CONTEST
We will be having the shortbread making contest again this year. Why not try your hand? The rules are on the entry form below.

If you don’t have your great-great Scottish grandmother’s recipe, go online, try out several recipes and create your own great-great grandchildren’s traditional recipe! This is a wonderful way to learn more about the Scottish culture.

There will be two categories for this year’s competition, traditional and flavored. “Traditional” means shortbread made using the primary ingredients of flour, butter and sugar. Other ingredients will not disqualify the shortbread as traditional, but should not materially alter the traditional taste. “Flavored” may include any other ingredients in whatever quantities.

Each Shortbread entry has its special story, but this year’s first place winner in the Traditional Shortbread category, Doris MacCallum, was not in attendance when the Judges announced the winners on Saturday. When called, Cathy MacCallum shared that she had made and entered her Mother-in-law’s shortbread recipe in her honor as Doris had passed away last January. Doris’ father (a Paterson) had been a baker in Aberdeen, Scotland, before immigrating to the US. He inspired her love of baking. It was Doris’ tradition to make everyone in the family her shortbread each Christmas. During a recent family gathering in Doris’ honor in Big Fork, MT, families shared how they cherished her act of love and horded the delicious offering every year. Doris’ offspring resulted in many great cooks in the family, including celebrated chef granddaughters on each coast who referred to Doris in articles written about them regarding their own skills. Doris’ shortbread legacy lives on.
