Shortbread Contest
We will be having the shortbread-making contest again this year. Why not try your hand? The rules are on the entry form below.
If you don’t have your great-great Scottish grandmother’s recipe, try several recipes online, and create your great-great grandchildren’s traditional recipe! This contest is a beautiful way to learn more about Scottish culture.
There will be two categories for this year’s competition, traditional and flavored. “Traditional” means shortbread made using the primary ingredients of flour, butter, and sugar. Other ingredients will not disqualify the shortbread as traditional but should not materially alter the traditional taste. “Flavored” may include any other ingredients in whatever quantities.

Shortbread Contest Rules
- There will be two categories for this year’s competition: traditional and flavored.
- “Traditional” means shortbread made using the primary ingredients of flour, butter, and sugar; other ingredients will not disqualify the shortbread as traditional but should not materially alter the traditional taste. “Flavored” may include any other ingredients in whatever quantities.
- You may enter your shortbread into either category. However, the judges may, at their discretion, alter the entry category if they disagree with the categorization by the entrant.
- Entrants must not use pre-made, store-bought dough.
- Shortbread may be round, square, or pie-shaped.
- Each entry must provide six pieces, each at least two inches square or the equivalent in other shapes.
- Entrants may submit as many separate entries as desired.
- An entry form must accompany each entry.
- You must deliver your entries to the Spokane St. Andrew’s Society tent no later than 1:00 p.m. on the day of the Games.
- Judging will be on a blind test basis, so aside from the entry form, the entries should not disclose their provenance. The judges’ verdict will be final.
