SPOKANE HIGHLAND GAMES ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The objectives of the Spokane Highland Games Association are to:
  • Host Scottish bag piping, Highland dancing and athletic competitions, and heritage exhibits.
  • Promote and support the teaching of these activities in the Spokane, WA area.

Following the 2012 Scottish Highland Games, the Association decided to offer three scholarships to further the second of these objectives:
  • The Ruth Schudel Memorial Scholarship for $200.
  • Two other scholarships for $150 each.

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS
  • The activity must be in the furtherance of Scottish piping and drumming, Highland dancing or Scottish athletics.
  • Any person may apply for a scholarship.
  • No consideration will be given to age, sex, race or creed of any applicant.
  • Scholarship requests may be made at anytime and will be considered as they are received.
  • Scholarship requests should indicate the activity for which the scholarship application is made.
  • The amount of the scholarships will be determined by the Executive Board, but shall not be more than the cost of the activity for which the scholarship is sought. In this connection, the cost of the activity is deemed to include the cost of any instruction, and the costs of travel and accommodation where applicable.
  • The Executive Board may, at its discretion, request proof of expenditure of funds from any awardee.
  • Applicants should demonstrate a capacity to benefit from the activity for which the application is made. Such demonstration will normally be in the form of a letter of recommendation from a person in the community whom the Executive Board believes qualified to make such a recommendation.
  • The Executive Board may take into account other scholarship awards made to applicants by organizations supporting Scottish activities.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who at the time of the award have no intention of leaving the Spokane area, and who will therefore be able through their studies to further the Scottish cultural life of the area.
  • The Executive Board will review applications received at each of its periodic meetings. If there are more applications received at a particular meeting than there are scholarships remaining available, the Executive Board will decide which will receive the scholarships.
