Highland Dance Rules

GENERAL INFORMATION

• The dance competition will be held on August 3, 2024, at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., Spokane, WA 99202. Free parking is available.
• The competition starts at 9:45 a.m. for all dancers.
• ​Check-in for dancers to receive their gate pass or gate stamp will begin at 8:30 am at the Main Gate's Will-Call window.
• Check-in for the dance competition will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the Dance Stage.
• ​The Ticket Booth at the Main Gate will open at 8:00 a.m. to allow families and friends to purchase tickets. (The Main Gate opens to the public at 9:00 a.m.)

• This year's dance judge will be Megan Ashworth from San Diego, California.

DANCE RULES

1. ​The competition begins at 9:45 a.m. for all dancers. Competitors will dance Highland dances first.
2. The dance competition will follow the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (RSOBHD) rules.
3. Dance Competitors must obtain gate passes or stamps at the Main Gate's Will-Call window beginning at 8:30 a.m.
4. Check-in for the dance competition will begin at 9:15 a.m. at the Dance Stage. Upon check-in, all competitors must show their gate pass or stamp and their current year's ScotDance USA card or RSOBHD registration card.
5. We will determine classes after the dance competition check-in closes.
6. First-to-enter, last-to-dance. Entries must be submitted by July 29, 2024. We will only accept entries received on or before July 29, 2024. The Spokane Highland Games will not accept late registrations.
7. The judge's decision is final. Any attempt to communicate with the judge may result in the competitor's disqualification.
8. Protests must be in writing, signed, and submitted to the Competition Organizer within 24 hours of the event. Protests must also include a fee of $20, which we will refund if the protest is sustained.
9. Any dancer causing a delay will forfeit their entry in the event.​
10. We will determine the competitor's age as of the day of the competition.
11. ​Dancers must remain in full costume to receive their awards.
12. All dances will count toward the aggregate trophy.
13. All groups will receive medals except Premier class dancers, who will receive cash awards.

Lilac City Choreography Challenge:

• The Lilac City Choreography Challenge is open to Beginner, Novice, Intermediate, and Premier dancers only.
• Solo Choreography Requirements: Choreography must include Highland or National movements and have Celtic-themed music. Each performance is limited to a maximum of 2 minutes.
• Please email choreography music to the competition organizer at [email protected] before July 29, and bring a backup copy of your music on your phone.

DANCE ENTRY FEES

• ​Primary                                               --  $5 per dance for up to four (4) dances
• Beginner                                             -- $ 8 per dance for up to five (5) dances
• Novice                                                 -- $40 for five (5) dances
• Intermediate                                       -- $40 for five (5) dances
• Premier (under 16)                            -- $48 for five (5) dances
• Premier (16 and over)                       -- $52 for five (5) dances
• Lilac City Choreography Challenge -- $15 for a single dance

• Note 1: We have included a $2.00 ScotDance fee in your dance entry fee.​
• ​Note 2: Entry Fees are not refundable.
