Highland Dance Rules

Special Note: Highland Dance registrations are closed. Late registrations, July 30 or later, will require a $10 Late Fee and must be pre-approved by Victoria Hawkins at 208-619-9278‬ or by email at victoria.lchd@gmail.com.​​
GENERAL INFORMATION
  • The competition will be held on August 5 at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., Spokane, WA 99202. Free parking is available.
  • The competition starts at 9:00 am for all dancers.
  • ​Check-in for dancers to receive their gate passes will begin at 8:00 am at the Main Gate.
  • Check-in for dancers to will begin at 8:30 am at the Dance Stage.
  • ​The Ticket Booth at the Main Gate will be open at 8:00 am to accommodate the purchase of tickets for accompanying family and friends.​ (Main Gate opens to the public at 9:00 am.)

  • This year's dance judge will be Emma Trentman.

DANCE RULES
  1. ​The competition begins at 9:00 am for all dancers. Highland dances will be danced first.
  2. The dance competition will run under the Royal Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (RSOBHD) rules.
  3. Gate passes will be available for dance competitors at the Main Gate beginning at 8:00 am.
  4. Check-in for dancers will begin at 8:30 am at the Dance Stage. All competitors must show their current year's ScotDance USA card upon check-in to compete.
  5. First-to-enter, last-to-dance. Entries must be submitted by July 29, 2023. There is a $10 additional late fee for all entries submitted on or after July 30.
  6. The decision of the judge is final. Any attempt to communicate with the judge may result in disqualification of the competitor.
  7. Protests must be made in writing, signed, and submitted to the Competition Organizer within 24 hours of the event and include a fee of $20 that will only be refunded if the protest is sustained.
  8. Any dancer causing a delay will forfeit their entry in the event.
  9. All classes will be divided after the entries close.
  10. The competitor's age is determined as of the day of the competition.
  11. ​Dancers must remain in full costume until after all awards have been presented.
  12. All dances will count toward the aggregate trophy.
  13. All groups will receive medals except Premier class dancers age 16 and over, who will receive cash awards.

Lilac City Choreography Challenge:
  • The Lilac City Choreography Challenge is open to Intermediate and Premier dancers only.
  • Choreography Requirements: Choreography must include Highland or National movements and have Celtic-themed music. Each performance is limited to a maximum of 2 minutes.
  • Please email choreography music to the competition organizer at victoria.lchd@gmail.com before July 29, and bring a backup copy of your music on your phone.

DANCE ENTRY FEES
  • ​Primary                                               ~ $ 5 per dance for up to four (4) dances
  • Beginner                                             ~ $ 7 per dance for up to five (5) dances
  • Novice                                                 ~ $35 for five (5) dances
  • Intermediate                                       ~ $35 for five (5) dances
  • Premier                                                ~ $45 for five (5) dances
  • Lilac City Choreography Challenge ~ $15 for a single dance
  • Note 1: A $2.00 ScotDance fee is included in your dance entry fee.​
  • ​Note 2: Entry Fees are not refundable.
