Sheepherding Exhibition
Our sheepherder, Ron Green, was born in Sweetwater, TN, and spent his youth on a farm in Madisonville, TN. His family was poor, so their dog had to work for its keep. Most of their farm dogs would work cattle or hogs by day, and tree raccoons and opossums by night.
As a child in a military family, he moved around a lot. While living in California, he owned some of his finest hounds and bird dogs. Dogs were a way of life for Ron. When he moved to Washington State, he acquired a small herd of mixed breed cattle on 100 acres. Soon he was introduced to the amazing Border Collie breed.
People who saw his dogs work invited him to try out for trialing. He won his first belt buckle in 1999 -- his first trial. By 2002, Ron had joined the USBCHA (United States Border Collie Handler's Association), first trialing in the USBCHA Cattledog program. Later, he started trialing in sheep. Since then, he has qualified for the Cattledog Finals and Sheepdog Finals with several difference dogs. In 2008, Ron won the high combined Trophy with his dog, AltaPete Teddy, A.K.A. Tait. In 2015, he was third in the finals with DeltaBluez Kiki. Most years, Ron has made it into the Double Lift Finals.
Ron has made it into many Double Lifts and has even won in both sheep and cattle. He has also directed and judged both Cattledog and Sheepdog trials. Ron is now semi-retired and enjoys training and trialing Border Collies. He is down to just a few head of cattle and a small flock of sheep that he keeps for training purposes. He is now able to travel to trials to meet old friends and to make new friends across America.
